Education is of crucial importance in a democratic society. I believe educators should strive to reach goals that go above and beyond the designated curriculum so that their students will be prepared to become productive members of our ever growing and changing technological society. Professional educators need to promote critical thinking, problem-solving strategies, and appeal to the higher level thinking skills that Bloom described in his taxonomy. Through the use of creativity, enthusiasm, and motivation I will help my students facilitate the acquisition of life-long learning skills.
I know that every student has the ability to learn and that each student brings his or her own unique set of experiences to the classroom. As a professional educator, I will take it upon myself to empathize with my students and apply a variety of teaching methods that appeal to the various intelligences they possess.
From the first day of school I will begin to establish positive teacher-student and peer relationships that build a community of support within the classroom. Every attempt should be made to understand the differing backgrounds and learning needs of each student so everyone can feel a sense of belonging and importance in the classroom.
I’ve always believed that classroom management is the most important element in the educational field because a well managed classroom enables the most learning to take place. Any inappropriate behavior should be addressed in a timely manner using counseling or behavioral methods that involve the students in examining and correcting their behavior.
Ideally, I’d like to think that I can accomplish all of my goals without any outside assistance. However, the truth is that a child’s guardians play a critical role in their child’s success. I will remain in constant contact with parents throughout the school year to alert them of any concerns that may arise about their child. I will also work with colleagues, administrators, and the community itself to enhance their learning experience.
It has been said that teaching is a calling, and for me there is nothing else that I have wanted to do with my life. As I reflect on the exceptional teachers I have been lucky to have over the years, I understand that teaching encompasses more than simply instructing students in the core curriculum areas. The teachers who have made a difference in my life are those that were able to balance being mentors, role models, instructors, and inspirations. When a teacher is mission driven and passionate about their career like I am, it begins to unequivocally show in their students’ academic and social life. Teaching is most definitely a challenge, but it is this challenge that I have decided to dedicate my life to mastering.
